Yesterday, House Committee on Armed Services Vice Chair Elaine Luria questioned the U.S. Navy’s plan to decommission the only 10-year old USS Freedom (LCS-1) despite its successful recent deployment to counter drug operations and illicit trafficking in South and Central America. Rep. Luria pressed Admiral Craig S. Faller, Commander, U.S. Southern Command, about the Navy’s decision to decommission the first four ships in this class despite the pressing need to grow the fleet against the backdrop of Chinese and Russian aggression, including in the Western Hemisphere.

Today, Congresswoman Elaine Luria announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) allocated $2,624,138 in federal COVID-19 relief grants to the City of Virginia Beach and Virginia Port Authority. These grants come from FEMA’s Disaster Fund, which received $45 billion from the CARES Act, which Congresswoman Elaine Luria voted for last year.

Congresswoman Elaine Luria today introduced legislation to secure benefits for military veterans exposed to toxic substances during their service in the Middle East, Southwest Asia, East Africa, and the Philippines. The Conceding Our Veterans’ Exposure Now and Necessitating Training (COVENANT) Act is the first bill addressing toxic exposure to include both a comprehensive list of overseas locations that would qualify a veteran for earned benefits, as well as a comprehensive list of presumptive illnesses contracted as a result of airborne exposure.
