Congresswoman Luria Statement on Killing of Qasem Soleimani
WASHINGTON – Today Congresswoman Elaine Luria (VA-02) issued the following statement on the killing of Qasem Soleimani.
“The killing of Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani was justified and morally right. It is wrong to say that the Americans started this conflict, as Iran has been attacking America and our allies through proxy groups for years. Soleimani has American blood on his hands at the behest of the rogue Iranian regime and as the leader of a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.”
“We must maintain a strong presence in the region as a deterrent and signal that America is committed to preventing Iran’s malign activities and expansionism and moreover, we must above all else prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear capability.”
“Our main goal must be de-escalating this situation and reaching a new status quo in the region, which Iran has signaled they desire as well. Iran has the capability to conduct precision strikes, and I interpret their deliberate show of force without causing additional casualties as a clear message that they are willing and able to retaliate but stopping short of action that would have necessitated an American counter-attack proves there is an off-ramp to end further overt hostilities. I do not believe the Iranian people want war with the US and likewise, there is no appetite in the US to engage in further hostilities or full-scale conflict with Iran.”
“This is personal for our district in Hampton Roads, from which the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group and Bataan Amphibious Readiness Group are deployed. Approximately ten thousand sailors and marines, as well as Army and Air Force assets from our region, provide presence and defend US interests in the Middle East.”
“I support the President’s decisive action to eliminate one of the world’s most prolific and dangerous terrorists, and I hope that he follows through on his statement today to seek peace and prosperity for all in the region.”
